Lessons From a Real, Live Turkey

Have you ever seen a wild turkey? Have you ever seen one on the street in the middle of a residential neighborhood? How about in Dallas? During the summer? I did. In case you’re wondering, he was plump. Like Thanksgiving plump.

One routine Saturday that found me running errands, chauffeuring teenagers, and going grocery shopping led me to drop off something at a friend’s house. When leaving the neighborhood, in the heart of Oak Cliff, Texas, my daughter and I saw a wild turkey. Walking down the street. Like he belonged there.

We stopped. We turned around, we called people we knew, we couldn’t believe it. A wild turkey. On Polk Street. In a place where it obviously didn’t belong.

Or did it belong there?

God is a master at working behind the scenes for our good. He will place us in situations where think we don’t belong because it is part of His plan.

Have you ever experienced a situation that just did not make sense to you? Things may have seemed out of place, illogical, and unbelievable. Things may have even left you gasping for air at the reality of it. Good things, bad things, and just weird things…like a turkey walking down the street like he owns it?

Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see

Hebrews 11:1

Reflect on this scripture as you think about the unbelievable things in your life. Thank God for His omnipotence and invisible hands are working together for good, even if we can’t see it at the time.

And if nothing else, hopefully it will give you a good laugh as you think about wild turkeys.
